NJROTC
James River High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) was commissioned in 2009 and has steadily grown into a dynamic and respected program in Chesterfield County.
Under the current leadership of Lieutenant Commander Matt Brink (Senior Naval Science Instructor) and Gunnery Sergeant Jerome Atger (Naval Science Instructor), the unit has seen a significant increase in enrollment, rising from 46 cadets in 2023 to 97 cadets in 2025. This growth is largely attributed to the strong mentorship provided by Orientation Coach, Major Fred Bravo (U.S. Air Force retired), who actively supported the NJROTC program and filled the NSI role for two years.
The unit continues to offer a robust curriculum aligned with the national NJROTC program, which emphasizes citizenship, leadership, maritime heritage, and naval operations. Cadets engage in community service, drill competitions, athletics, and academic enrichment, including free ACT/SAT preparation.
The curriculum progresses through Naval Science 1–4, offering instruction in physical fitness, first aid, naval history, military leadership, and college and career readiness. With 60% of graduating cadets pursuing higher education and many qualifying for advanced enlistment rank, the program provides a strong foundation for future success.
Cadets also participate in a wide range of activities including field trips to Naval Station Norfolk, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the Virginia War Memorial, as well as leadership and cadet orientation development camps. The program also hosts an annual End-of-Year Awards Ceremony to recognize cadet achievements in academics, leadership, and service. As a Citizen Development initiative, James River NJROTC is committed to shaping the character and future of its cadets.
Through teamwork, discipline, and civic responsibility, James River NJROTC continues to uphold the Navy’s core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment.
