During the February all-county awards celebration, retired principal Pete Koste (at podium) announced three coaches being honored with Legacy Recognition Awards for making a difference in girls sports:
Doug Garrett (closest to podium) coached 37 years at Midlothian High: girls basketball for 32 years and girls tennis for 10 years. He retired in 2008 with a basketball record of 522 wins, including a 31-0 state championship season in 2000.
Rachel Mead (next to Doug Garrett) coached for 32 years. After serving as director of student activities and field hockey coach at James River High, she moved to Cosby High where she coached one of the state’s top field hockey programs and the girls basketball team, which she led to four state championships.
Pat Holdren taught at Thomas Dale High for 35 years, where she also coached girls basketball and other sports and served as athletic director — the first female athletic director in the metro Richmond area. She died in 2018; accepting the award were Thomas Dale High director of student activities Ricky Talman and two of Pat’s friends and colleagues, Mary Beth Johnson and Lyn Williams.
